What your clients will ask
- Is my home in scope, and which band will it fall in?
- We own it jointly, or through a trust or a company. Who is actually liable?
- I live abroad. Does it apply to me?
- Can I defer it, and what would that do to my estate?
- The home is empty while the estate is settled. Will it pay double?
- The Valuation Office has it wrong. What can I do, and by when?
The tax questions sit with you. The valuation questions need evidence about the home as it stood in 2026, and a view on whether the band will stand up. That is the part we take on.

Who we work with
Private client solicitors
Probate and estate planning, trusts holding a family home, and clients weighing deferral against its effect on the estate. A £2m home left empty while an estate is settled can face the 100% empty homes premium, so recording the home's condition and dates from the start matters. We also work with live-in caretaker services, including UK military veterans, for homes that will stand empty for a long time.
Accountants and tax advisers
Clients who expect you to have an answer on a new property tax, and those with homes held through companies.
Family offices and wealth managers
Several homes across a family, where the combined surcharge is significant and consistent evidence matters.
Trustees and trust companies
Trustees are liable for homes held in trust. See do trusts and companies pay?
Estate agents
Buyers and sellers of homes near £2m will want to know how the surcharge affects the price, and sellers near a line will want the band settled.

Last checked against the government's Budget documents and consultation response on 30 October 2026. The surcharge is being legislated in the Finance Bill 2026-27 and is not yet law. Some detail is still to come in regulations.
